The value of refining leaders’ personal purpose

Posted on May 12th, 2023

Building trust in your leadership, and within the teams you lead, is critical for sustained high performance. G11 helps leaders do this in a variety of ways, including helping leaders find their own purpose.

Many company’s have a purpose statement – this is the company’s why. So how do we find each individual’s why? It is through their own ‘purpose statement’.

People know what their authentic self is - most can bring their authentic self to the surface in their day-to-day life. We tend to use our good traits quite organically. Not so easy, is the use of our good traits in the work environment. When leaders can be authentic in the workplace, and trust is formed, it is compelling for teammates and for customers.

So how can we find, and value, our authentic self in the workplace? G11 uses a three-step approach:

1. A strength finder exercise
2. Determine what inspires you
3. Figure out what gives you energy.

When you are passionate at work, people gravitate to you – you become a leader. Yet if we are unable to bring our passion to the surface, because we are unaware of our strengths, our inspiration, or what gives us energy, the opposite can occur.

G11 Lead Consultant and performance research guru, Simon Jones, recalls cracking the code with a leaders he had been working with; “this leader couldn’t articulate his purpose, but when we did the G11 three-step approach it was brilliant, and empowering for his colleagues. They worked out his why, and since then, they are working together with passion.”

“From just one short session we worked out what gave this leader energy. For him, he loved to go fishing in his spare time. His colleagues began to see fishing in a different light, through his eyes: it’s strategic, it’s technical, it can be relatively sophisticated, analytical as to where to fish, it’s a persistent challenge, requires exploration, taking risks, and pushing the limits.”

“This series of exercises has had quite the impact on this workforce. Colleagues share with each other and really enjoy the connection. They learn about each other, and through this they form a stronger connection – trust is truly formed.”
